Italia 13.98 deck layout
The ergonomics of the deck of Italia 13.98 has been studied in detail. The space in the cockpit is at the top of the class. The sunbathing area on roof is flat and smooth. Five lockers provide plenty of space for storage during cruising with a deep sail locker in the bow separated from the anchor locker. The opening transom is perfect for a dry and safe navigation, as to enjoy an easy access to the sea.
The trimming of all maneuvers is exemplary, both for a solitary sailing, with the mainsail winches that can easily be used by the helmsman, both in crew, even in race.
The equipment is at the top level, with all winches oversized, rolling ball bearings blocks, a high performance mast, all the running rigging made of technical fibers, the rod rigging and hydraulic backstay and the under deck jib furler.
A very strong construction
The main construction features of Italia 13.98 meet the rigorous quality standards of Italia Yachts. This results in a stiff while lightweight hull, with an weighty ballast for outstanding performance in all conditions.
Hull and deck of Italia 13.98 are built in sandwich “E-glass” laminated with vinylester resins applied at a controlled temperature. Reinforced plates are inserted in correspondence of deck equipment, while the central strip of the hull is full laminated. All bulkheads are bonded to the hull and fixed with the internal structure and deck. This is superimposed to the hull, glued with structural adhesive and fixed internally.
Rudder
The rudder blade is laminated in fiberglass with PVC core on female moulds. The aluminium alloy (anticorodal 6082) rudder stock is biconical. The stock bearings are self-aligning.
The two wheels are 90 cm in diameter and are made in stainless steel covered by leather. A magnetic compass is installed near the helm position.
Hull and deck laminated in sandwich
Hull and deck are laminated in sandwich with differentiated density PVC core; the unidirectional and biaxial E-glass fibres are laminated with vinylester resin. The lamination is carried out at controlled temperature between 16° C and 25° C.
Structural frame
Inside the hull is placed a structural frame reinforced with carbon, laminated into female mold, glued and fixed, to support the efforts both of the mast and the shrouds. All bulkheads and furniture are bonded to the hull.
Bulkheads, reinforcements and finishings
Plates are included in the structure to increase resistance where the deck hardware is mounted. The collar of the mast is structural. The structural bulkheads of Italia 13.98 are made of marine plywood from 15 to 25 mm thick and are glued and gusseted to the hull and deck. The deck is glued and laminated to the hull. A polyester strap is provided to lift the boat (optional). Hull and deck are finished in gelcoat, walkable areas are prepared with antiskid from female mould. Cockpit benches and cockpit floor are covered with 10 mm thick teak.
The keel
The keel is “T” shaped with steel structure and the torpedo is cast lead with 3% antimony. The steel structure is enclosed in a fiberglass fairing in order to optimize the wing sections.
The ballast weight is about 3,500 Kg. The draft of the boat is 2,50 m.
